United Companies Recognized by CSSGA and CRMCA for Educational Outreach
May 8, 2025
United Companies is proud to share that its long-standing educational initiative, Rocks Build Our World (RBOW), has been awarded the 2024 Community Engagement and Sustainability Award by the Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (CSSGA) and the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA). This recognition highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and meaningful community involvement through education.
“Our continued dedication and commitment to our educational program called Rocks Build Our World was recognized through the state associations, CSSGA & CRMCA when we received the 2024 Community Engagement and Sustainability Award,” shared Tyra Bartuska, a key leader of the program. “This award showcases the great work we have sustained and our dedication to our communities. This program is a fun and interactive way to teach 4th graders in our local markets to learn about the core fundamentals of our industry.”
The RBOW program has been running for over 15 years, reaching more than 3,000 students through more than 150 presentations. It introduces fourth-grade students to the essential role of aggregates and mining in daily life while teaching them about geology, ecology, safety, and business concepts in a hands-on, engaging format.
Each presentation begins with an introduction to United Companies and an overview of the mining industry’s importance in today’s world. Students get the chance to mix concrete in the classroom and participate in an activity where they act as their own mining company—“mining” chocolate chips from cookies while creating business plans to simulate real-world operations. These activities help students develop a foundational understanding of geology, environmental responsibility, safety, and financial literacy.
The program concludes with a visit from one of United Companies’ large trucks, giving students a close-up look and an opportunity to ask questions. This interaction often becomes a highlight for students and teachers alike.
RBOW also plays an important role in helping United Companies share the story of its sustainable operations. By bringing education directly into the classroom, the company is able to foster understanding and build trust with future generations about the value and responsibility of the industry.
During the 2024 award consideration period alone, United Companies conducted 38 classroom presentations reaching more than 1,060 students and teachers.
Special recognition goes to Tyra Bartuska and Jason Burkey, the primary drivers of the program for United Companies. Jason was instrumental in bringing RBOW to life in the region and expanding its reach over the years. Their passion and dedication have made this impactful program what it is today.
United Companies is honored by this recognition and remains committed to educating and empowering the next generation through innovative, community-centered outreach.
