October 15, 2014
United Companies of Mesa County was recognized for two Best in Colorado awards for Rural Highway Reconstruction and Smoothest Pavement New or Reconstruction. Their amazing work and attention to detail on the State Highway 13, County Road 60 South project earned them recognition at the 19th Annual Best in Colorado Asphalt Awards Dinner and Program February 27, 2013 in Denver, Colorado.
In conjunction with CDOT Region 3, United Companies completed this large project consisting of a full depth reconstruction with the addition of passing lanes and widening. 5,000 cubic yards of muck excavation was encountered, and 2,000 square yards of geogrid was used to stabilize the soils which resulted in significant cost savings to the project. The quality and accuracy of the embankment and base placement resulted in 100% of the surface being recorded as stable prior to the asphalt pavement.
With at least one lane open to traffic at all times, nearly 20,000 tons of asphalt was placed. Together, United Companies and CDOT were able to keep the high volume of truck and other traffic flowing through the energy development area. The Award Judges Noted the Following: “This was an outstanding project, scoring very high in all categories. The quality of the work was evident in all aspects.”
This high quality project yielded smoothness values in HRI Category II with a composite average of 38.8 and has been noted as the smoothest project in Colorado in 2012.
