United Companies Earns ACPA Excellence in Concrete Paving Award

June 2, 2022

United Companies earned a 2022 Excellence in Concrete Paving Award from the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter of the American Concrete Paving Association for its I-70B 1st Street and Grand Avenue project in Grand Junction, Colo.

United Companies was the general contractor on the project, which included the reconstruction and realignment of I-70B, SH 340, and N. 1st Street with multi-modal, drainage, lighting, traffic signal, and access improvements. The concrete paving was subcontracted to IHC Scott.

“This was a showcase project for Colorado DOT and the City of Grand Junction,” said Estimator and Project Manager Mark Painter. “The project showcased the exceptional talent and capabilities of the entire United Companies team.”

Matt Schmitt and Jay Gallup were the Project Superintendents, and virtually the entire construction team had a part in building the 12-month project at some point, Painter said.

The intersection, which is part of Grand Junction’s major traffic artery, had to remain open during construction. In order to allow for effective traffic flow and safe construction, temporary roundabouts designed by Estimator and Project Manager Justin Vensel were installed. This saved the project money by eliminating the need for temporary traffic signals and allowed for longer concrete pavement placements, which increased efficiency.

Construction teams lead by United Companies’ Construction Manager Adam Lynch worked through the night to construct the roundabouts with very minimal disruption to the city’s busiest intersection.

Painter said United Companies’ Redi-Mix Concrete Division also supplied more than 13,700 cys of Redi-Mix and more than 6,300 cys of flow fill.

“The quality level of the Redi Mix products was exceptional.”

No CDOT reportable accidents occurred during the project’s four phases, a testament to United Companies’ continued focus and emphasis on safety.
