Our History

United Companies, one of Western Colorado’s most prominent construction and materials supply companies, had a modest beginning in 1953 when the Nesbitt family purchased a small ready-mixed concrete company that was operating in Grand Junction.  Since then, we have steadily grow from a handful of employees working in the Grand Junction area to currently employing 300 people and serving a market area of over 14,500 square miles in 11 counties in Western Colorado.

The company operated as three separate corporations until 1983 when United Sand and Gravel, United Redi Mix and United Paving were merged to form United Companies of Mesa County, Inc.  Under the guidance of Ken Nesbitt, we continued to thrive and grow, even through the unfavorable local and national economic climate of the 1980s and early 1990s.  During these years, United expanded our area of operations from exclusively working in Mesa County to successfully competing for work in Rio Blanco, Garfield, Delta, Montrose and Gunnison counties.  A significant step forward was made when in 1994 a permanent facility was opened in Montrose at the Colona site.

United Companies joined the Oldcastle Materials team in 1998. This allowed United Companies the support and resources of the largest materials supply company in the world while allowing us to continue operating with the local identity and the same management and business strategies that had proven to be so successful over the years.

We are best known as the company with the red, white and blue trucks, serving our communities with the production of sand and rock products, ready-mixed concrete, hot mixed asphalt and construction services, including grading and paving of highways, streets, parking lots and driveways.

In 1989, our management committed to a mission statement, “To be the premier construction and materials supply company in Western Colorado.”  Mission accomplished, as we are a prominent component in one of America’s largest and most successful construction and material supply organizations.”  We continue to operate with a commitment to excellence, using a five-point Code of Conduct as a guide.  The five points in that code are a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, quality products and workmanship, honesty and integrity in all aspects of the business, and performance of work in a cost-effective manner.  The safety, environmental and quality awards we have received over the years are a testament to the success and value of that commitment.

Telluride Gravel originated in Telluride, Colorado in 1972 and was later inherited by Pete Ballode in 1989. The company quickly grew from a small supplier and limited construction operation into a full service material supply and construction services under Pete’s management. Now we offer a complete line of services throughout the western slope of Colorado including aggregate and ready-mix production, site work, mass excavation, utility installation, building material supply, snow removal and trucking.
