About Us

United Companies, one of Western Colorado’s most prominent construction and construction materials supply companies, had a modest beginning when in 1953 the Nesbitt family purchased a small ready mixed concrete company that was operating in Grand Junction.  Since then, the company has steadily grow from a handful of employees working in the Grand Junction area to currently employing 300 people, and having a market area of over 14,500 square miles in 11 counties in Western Colorado.

The company operated as three separate corporations until 1983 when United Sand and Gravel, United Redi Mix and United Paving were merged to form United Companies of Mesa County, Inc.  Under the guidance of Ken Nesbitt, the company continued to thrive and grow, even through the unfavorable local and national economic climate of the 1980s and early 1990s.  During these years, United expanded their area of operations from exclusively working in Mesa County to successfully competing for work in Rio Blanco, Garfield, Delta, Montrose and Gunnison counties.  A significant step forward was made when in 1994 a permanent facility was opened in Montrose at the Colona site.

A monumental change came in 1998 when the company was acquired by Oldcastle Materials, an American entity of CRH, plc. that is based in Dublin, Ireland.  Although the company was owned by an international company, and directed by the American office in Washington, D.C., it was allowed to continue to operate in the same manner as it had prior to the acquisition, with its local identity, and the same management and business strategies that had proven to be so successful over the years.

United Companies is best known as the company with the red, white and blue trucks, serving the several communities with the production of ready mixed concrete, hot mixed asphalt, processed sand and gravel, specification aggregates and construction services including grading and paving of highways, streets, parking lots, and driveways.

In 1989, United Companies’ management committed to a mission statement, “To be the premier construction and materials supply company in Western Colorado”.  Mission accomplished, as United Companies is a prominent component in one of America’s largest and most successful construction and material supply organizations.  United operates with a commitment to excellence, using a five-point Code of Conduct as a guide.  The five points in that code are a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, quality products and workmanship, honesty and integrity in all aspects of the business, and performance of work in a manner that will return a profit to the owners of the company.  The safety, environmental and quality awards that have been presented to the company over the years are a testament to the success and value of that commitment.
